Am 12. Mai 2013 feierte Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, Gründungspräsident der Republik Namibia, seinen 84. Geburtstag. Präsident Hifikepunye Pohamba nutzte die Gelegenheit und gratulierte dem Gründungspräsidenten im Namen der gesamten Nation, der SWAPO Führungsriege und SWAPO Mitglieder sowie der anwesenden Gäste herzlich zum Geburtstag.

IN 1956 – way back then when one of the now internationally known political icons of Africa got married - without an invitation, like most children in Windhoek’s township at the time, I attended the wedding of one of the most popular ‘Tates.’ I am talking about Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma when he married ‘Sisi’ Kovambo more than five decades ago in what is now referred to in history books as the Old Location – the current Hochland Park suburb in the capital.
A wedding photograph of the first couple shows a clean-shaven young man with an equally, young, beautiful woman in a white bridal gown next to him – those were the Nujomas of yesteryear before some inevitable physical changes occurred.
The change came in exile - the bearded face of Sam Nujoma had been seen at many international political gatherings in various cities and towns around the globe where he rubbed shoulders and shook hands with kings, queens, presidents and prime ministers plus several political personalities and academics interested in the future of Namibia as he sought support, and material and financial aid for the national liberation struggle spearheaded by Swapo.
Most Africans celebrate births, weddings and deaths believe me – but here this time, we are marking the 84th anniversary of the birth of the Founding Father of the Namibian nation who was born on May 12, 1929 at Etunda, a village not very far from Okahao in the then Ongandjera district – now in the Omusati Region.
EU deadline for EPAs regrettable - Schlettwein

The EU Parliament's deadline of October 01, 2014 on which the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries that have not signed the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) will forfeit their preferential market access into the EU, has been described by Trade and Industry Minister, Calle Schlettwein, as regrettable."This approach taken by the EU goes against the letter and spirit of what is supposed to be a partnership and is regrettable. It also has the potential of placing undue pressure on the negotiating processes. I therefore reiterate my concern over this unilateral step by a negotiating partner," said Schlettwein yesterday at the opening of a two-day national consultation on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) negotiations. read more....
Namibia to host the eleventh session of the Conference of the Parties (COP11) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

The announcement was made on 15 April 2013, by The Honourabe Deputy Minister for Environment and Tourism of Namibia, Mr. Pohamba Shifeta, at the opening of the CRIC11.
Accordingly a process of consultation for the preparation of the COP11 will be formally launched with the host country, shortly following the completion of the CRIC11 session.
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is established by the Convention as the supreme decision-making body, and it comprises all Parties to the Convention. The first five sessions of the COP were held annually from 1997 to 2001. Starting 2001 sessions are held on a biennial basis.
The COP has two subsidiary bodies
The Committee on Science and Technology (CST) was established under Article 24 of the Convention as a platform for scientific collaboration under the UNCCD. The Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) was established at COP 5 in 2005. It is a standing subsidiary body to assist in regularly reviewing the implementation of the Convention. The ten-year Strategy to enhance the implementation of the Convention defines the focus areas of both subsidiary bodies for the period 2008-2018. (source: UNCCD)

PRE-QUALIFICATION FOR THE EPC TURNKEY TENDER ON THE KUDU POWER PROJECT

DESCRIPTION:
NamPower (Pty) Ltd, the national electricity utility of Namibia, is developing the Kudu 800MW CCGT Power Station near Oranjemund in south-western Namibia. The combined cycle power station project will use natural gas from the Kudu Gas Field which is located 170km off-shore. The power plant will be connected to the Namibian and South African power grids. Power from the plant will be purchased under long-term Power Purchase Agreements by NamPower for local and regional use. NamPower signed a Project Development Agreement (the PDA) with the Kudu Gas Field Upstream Developers on 1 March 2013, facilitating timelines to achieve financial close within the next 12 months. NamPower has appointed its transaction advisors consisting of Ernst & Young, Strategic International Advisory Limited, DLA Piper (UK) LLP and ESB International. The EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) Turnkey Contractor for the Kudu Power Project shall be selected through a competitive bid process. Enquiry documents will be issued to pre-qualified tenderers in the 2nd quarter of 2013 and the EPC Turnkey Contractor will be selected by the 4th quarter of 2013. Companies seeking inclusion on NamPower’s short-list of pre-qualified tenderers will be invited to submit tenders for the construction of the Kudu CCGT power plant and will have to complete the pre-qualification questionnaire. Invited tenderers for the Kudu CCGT project will be selected from those companies who have submitted substantially completed questionnaires and who have subsequently qualified according to the requirements of NamPower's pre-qualification criteria.
